11 April in Indian history is celebrated as the birth anniversary of the following personalities:

Jyotirao Govindrao Phule (11 April 1827 – 28 November 1890), an Indian social activist, thinker, anti-caste social reformer and writer. His work extended to many fields, including the eradication of untouchability and the caste system and for his efforts in educating women and exploited caste people. He was born on 11 April 1827 in Maharashtra, British India.

Kasturba Gandhi (11 April 1869 – 22 February 1944), an Indian political activist. She married Mohandas Gandhi in 1883. In association with her husband and son, she was involved in the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. She was very influenced by her husband Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a.k.a. Mahatma Gandhi. She was born on 11 April 1869 in Bombay Presidency, British India.

Jamini Roy (11 April 1887 – 24 April 1972) was an Indian painter. He was honoured with the State award of Padma Bhushan in 1955. He was one of the most famous pupils of Abanindranath Tagore, whose artistic originality and contribution to the emergence of art in India remains unquestionable. He was born on 11 April 1887.

K. L. Saigal (11 April 1904 – 18 January 1947), was an Indian singer and actor. He was considered the first superstar of the Hindi film industry, which was centred in Kolkata during Saigal’s time. Saigal’s unique voice quality which was a mixture of baritone and soft tenor was the benchmark for most of the singers who followed him. In fact, it remains the gold standard even today shining through very early and practically primitive recording technology. He was born on 11 April 1904.

Sandhya Roy is an Indian actress and politician. She is known for her work in Bengali cinema. She is the recipient of BFJA Award three times. and one Filmfare Awards East best actress for Ganadevata. Roy made her cinematic debut with Rajen Tarafdar’s Antariksha (1957). She was born on 11 April 1941 in Bengal Presidency, British India.

Shriniwas Dadasaheb Patil, an Indian politician and ex-officer of the Indian Administrative Services (IAS). Since October 2019, he is a Member of Lok Sabha from the Satara constituency from Maharashtra, India. He was born on 11 February 1941 in Bombay Presidency, British India.

Tejendraprasad Pande,  acharya of the Narnarayan Dev Gadi (Ahmedabad) of the Swaminarayan Sampraday, a Hindu sect, by his father, the previous acharya, Devendraprasad, and was enthroned on 13 October 1969. He was born on 11 April 1944 in Bombay Presidency, British India.

Jagadguru Bharathi Tirtha Mahaswami, an Indian religious leader.  He is the 36th Jagadguru Shankaracharya of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham. He was born on 11 April 1951 in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Ravindra Kaushik (11 April 1952 – November 2001), best known as Black Tiger, was an Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agent. He is regarded as India’s best spy to ever penetrate the ranks of the Pakistan army. He was born on 11 April 1952 in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, India.

Rohini Hattangadi, an Indian actress, known for her work in Marathi-language and Hindi films, television and theatre. She won two Filmfare Awards, one National Film Award, and is the only Indian actress to win the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Kasturba Gandhi in Gandhi (1982). She appeared in over 80 feature films and is active in theatre and television. She was born on 11 April 1955 in Maharashtra, India.

Charanjit Kumar, a former Indian hockey player. He was part of the Indian hockey team that won the gold medal in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. He was part of the Indian hockey team in the 1984 Olympics. He was born on 11 April 1956.

Death Anniversary

11 April in Indian history is observed as the death anniversary of the following personalities:

Phanishwar Nath Renu (4 March 1921 – 11 April 1977), one of the most successful and influential writers of modern Hindi literature. His notable work was Maila Anchal. The 2017 Bollywood Film Panchlait is also based on this short story. In his stories, he depicted the life of rural Bihar and its people, especially the backward and the deprived. He was awarded Padma Shree, the fourth-highest civilian award. In 1977, the author returned the Padma Shri he had received in 1970, as a protest against the Emergency.v Renu died on 11 April 1977 at an age of 56.

Shrimad Rajchandra (9 November 1867 – 11 April 1901), a Jain poet, mystic, philosopher, scholar and reformer. Born near Morbi, he claimed to have a recollection of his past lives at the age of seven. He performed Avadhāna, memory retention and recollection test that gained him popularity, but he later discouraged it in favour of his spiritual pursuits. He wrote much philosophical poetry including Atma Siddhi. He also wrote many letters and commentaries and translated some religious texts. He is best known for his teachings on Jainism and his spiritual guidance to Mahatma Gandhi. He died on 11 April 1901.

Vishnu Prabhakar (21 June 1912 – 11 April 2009), a Hindi writer. He had several short stories, novels, plays and travelogues to his credit. Prabhakar’s works have elements of patriotism, nationalism and messages of social upliftment. He was the First Sahitya Academy Award winner from Haryana. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1993, Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan Award in 1995 and the Padma Bhushan (the third highest civilian honour of India) by the Government of India in 2004. He died on 11 April 2009 in New Delhi, India.

B. M. Idinabba (17 September 1920 – 11 April 2009), a prominent Kannada poet, journalist, freedom fighter, politician and Kannada activist from Karnataka. has received many prestigious awards including Rajyotsava Prashasti. He died on 11 April 2009.

11 April 1930Lakshman Jhula was open to the public. It is a suspension bridge across the river Ganges, located 5 kilometers northeast of the city of Rishikesh in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It connects two villages and it is a structure made out of iron that is suspended at a height of 70 feet from the river. The well-known tourist spot has rich mythology attached to it. The bridge has a legendary significance which says Lord Lakshmana, crossed the Ganga using just two jute ropes. In memory of this historic feat, a 284-foot-long hanging rope bridge was built.

11 April is observed as National Safe Motherhood Day. It is aimed to enforce that women must have the availability and adequate access to care during pregnancy childbirth and postnatal services.
