World Lion Day is observed annually on 10 August. The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness about the conservation of lions as a species. Lions are at risk of extinction today, but this was not the case in the past. Around three million years ago, lions were present in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Since then, a great deal has changed. During the past five decades, the global lion population has decreased by 95%.

About Lions in India

Lion populations have declined worldwide except in Africa and India. There has been an increase in the number of wild cats in India for some time.
There has been a gradual increase in the number of lions in Gujarat’s Gir forest, which is home to lions.
After initially experiencing a decline, the population of Asiatic lions in Gir and the larger Saurashtra region has gradually increased. From 2015 to 2020, the number of these lions has increased from 523 to 674.

In light of the fact that these species continue to go extinct across the globe, it is up to the common man to spread the word about their conservation. Continuing to encroach on the habitats of animals for our own needs will result in the list of endangered animals increasing and disrupting the food cycle, which ultimately impacts humans.

History of World Lion Day

Dereck and Beverly Joubert, internationally recognized conservationists, award-winning filmmakers, and National Geographic explorers, came up with the idea and observed the first World Lion Day in 2013.

Over the past 30 years, they have made concerted efforts to conserve wildlife species, with a particular focus on lions in their natural habitat. Furthermore, they collaborate with various localities that reside near the habitats of wild cats in order to develop safety measures for lions.
